we survived day four
(survival: tears, backtalk, cards)
now it’s day by day

we survived day four
(survival: tears, backtalk, cards)
now it’s day by day

powder has called out
waking us on Sunday morn
a soft, silent church

so simple, really:
the teens play cabin boardgames
while we ski for love

first: the moon and sun
second: 8.5 miles
third: a fourteener

fourth: pomapoo strength
fifth: learning to climb mountains
sixth: altitude high

a weekend hiking
is the only proper way
to enjoy summer

red sun, glassy lake
paddling with the puppy:
perfect lakehouse day

from flat Dakota
emerges a river trail
hard on legs and kids

but water wins views
however it meanders
giving life to all

book club getaway:
everything you can picture
(a rich man’s world)
all the hikes and views
we could only hope to own
with our simple steps

packing to backpack:
more effort than backpacking
as puppy attests

weekday hiking joys:
mostly-empty trails with dogs
who love each other

uncompromised views
of our blue-sky perfect peaks
and wildflowers

best of all? no work
to big down miles of fun,
of escapism
