Sweet Sixteen in a Bittersweet Year

the day starts with tests

to secure her friends’ safety

in this COVID year

negative is good

whoever thought it’d be good

to be negative?

and so, she smiles

and we blow up the balloons

(losing one to wind)

and the four friends come

and she’s happy for just a day

of this lonely life

Just Three Words

Vamos a ganar

with this American map

he knows nothing of

every moment counts

and he has read my soul here

with these three small words

Cherish Them

these fleeting moments

shared with a stencil of love

between my daughters

Hallowed

working for love

(sometimes it doesn’t pay back)

but we always try

Teen Life

some glow before snow

our weekend wrapped in moments

without argument

Atardecer a Nuestro Viaje

sunset petroglyph

lighting up our last night here

with teens who smile

Flight Plan

possibilities

rest in moments we strive for,

moments we drive for

Remote Learning Perks

September travel?

we can learn geology

and visit arches

we can buy peaches

from the orchards where they’re grown

relishing their juice

yet COVID follows

with at-capacity parks,

a shut-down ghost town

my motto follows:

be prepared. pack sushi, fruit.

drive towards the sunset.

find the world’s curves

where the sky clears away smoke

and we can just. breathe.

National Daughters’ Day

they are my world

even if they hate me now

(these teen years will pass)

Sculpture Class in the Time of COVID

my paper artist

finished her first high school art

with paper and paint
