i'll write a haiku
as easy as this damn day
filled with lines. and love.

you will never know
how hard i've tried to earn this.
you can taste the snow.

you can taste blue sky.
it comes in moments, this love.
moments found on slopes.
i'll write a haiku
as easy as this damn day
filled with lines. and love.

you will never know
how hard i've tried to earn this.
you can taste the snow.

you can taste blue sky.
it comes in moments, this love.
moments found on slopes.
a powder escape
from the harsh reality
of everyday life

before dawn arrives
the snow still touches the sky
with white fingertips

Berthoud Pass driving
sisters learn two years apart
same day, different face

2020 ends
in the same way it began
(with downhill skiing)

2020 ends
nearly every way different
than a year ago

2020 brings
a balance of sorrow, joy
hidden behind masks

2020 ends
with screens controlling our lives
(searching for meaning)

2021
with its 5-syllable self
will bring us new hope
a cold winter walk
along the Colorado
right where it begins

a hot springs retreat
to strip the cold off our skins,
bring heat to our bones

some rough beginnings
can end in the perfect way
for a perfect day

no snow day for us
but i ski between meetings
beating remote games

some glow before snow
our weekend wrapped in moments
without argument

from smoky skies to ice
all the devil’s handiwork
(Earth in humans’ grip)
